Test Driving a Truck: All You Need to Know
Test driving a potential truck can be the most exciting part of the purchase process! Not only is it the time to see if you like driving the vehicle, but it’s also the time to sit back and envision yourself with it for many years to come. Diesel trucks are built to last, which is why here at Performance Trucks, we encourage you to try as many vehicles as you’d like. Here’s what you need to know about test driving a truck so that your experience is a breeze!
Do some homework beforehand
Whether you know exactly what you want or don’t know where to start, our staff is more than prepared to help. That being said, it’s always good to do some research and see what options you are interested in. This helps with figuring out what you like in terms of appearance, but can also narrow down your search based on costs and other factors. Even if you know what you want, we recommend test driving about three vehicles, just to give yourself some options. Check out our wide selection of inventory and make a list of your favorites.
Get comfortable before you start the drive
Trucks are a lot different than cars in ways, the main way being size. Make sure you feel comfortable getting in and out of the vehicle. Take the time to adjust all your mirrors and see where the main controls are. Before you put your foot on the gas, get comfortable in the seat. Can you see well? Do you have enough legroom? Find your perfect seat adjustment so you’re not fidgeting when trying to focus on the drive.
Pay attention to a few things during the drive:
- How easy it is to maneuver—trucks are big, so this is pretty important!
- Acceleration and brakes
- The feel of the truck in terms of steering and handling
- The mirrors and visibility of your surroundings
- Your overall comfort during the drive
Try out more than just the driver’s seat
While the driver is very important, think about your passengers! Try all the seats to feel out the space and see how much room there is for your belongings. This could also be a good time to check out electronics and connect your devices if applicable.
Driving during the day vs. at night
Most test drives are done in the daytime, but what most people don’t consider is driving at night! Once you find a few trucks you’re comfortable with, come back for a test drive when it’s darker out—this way you can check out the headlights, interior lights, and other areas.
Relax and enjoy the process
Don’t feel like you need to rush through your test drives. We encourage you to take your time and get a feel for every aspect of the vehicles, from the basic driving components to the technology features. We pride ourselves on our relaxed and friendly atmosphere, so you should never feel limited to time or number of drives.
