Winterizing Your Truck

Winter will be here before we know it in New Waterford, OH. Make sure you and your truck are prepared for the cooler temperatures by getting your vehicle winterized! Check out our tips on how to get ready:

Prepare an Emergency Vehicle Kit

The good news about trucks is that they can handle much harsher weather better than smaller vehicles. That being said, it’s still a good idea to have an emergency kit in your truck, because you never know what might happen on the Ohio roads this winter. Here are some things to include:

  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Warm clothing or blankets
  • Bottled water and non-perishable foods
  • Snow shovel
  • Radio
  • Jumper cables
  • First Aid kit
  • Ice scraper

Check Your Truck’s Battery

What’s worse than needing to jump-start your car due to a dead battery? Doing it in the cold, rain, or snow. Avoid this by checking your vehicle’s battery life before something happens. Cold weather drains a battery much more quickly than warm weather does. The team at Performance Trucks would be happy to run a test for you in our service department in order to see how much life your battery has left. Keep in mind that a car battery typically lasts between four and six years. If yours is near that mark, it’s time for a replacement.

Fill Up the Windshield Wiper Fluid

Wipers

Visibility is important anytime you’re driving, but it is even more critical during the winter when less-than-pleasant weather hits. Make sure your wiper fluid is filled up and that you’re using one that won’t freeze. It’s also not a bad idea to keep an extra bottle or two of fluid in your trunk in case you run out unexpectedly.

Do Regular Tire Inspections

Tire

You should always keep an eye on your tires, but even more so during the winter months! Changes in temperature can cause air pressure to decrease. Do a quick check before driving to work in the morning to make sure your tires aren’t too low.
